Blazes Caused by Faulty Equipment
On the 10th of May, a man in Huntley managed to control a laundry fire in his home. The man woke to the sound of his smoke alarms and closed the doors to the laundry and kitchen before fleeing the home. This helped to contain the fire while the professional fire crews arrived on the scene.
After investigating the incident, Fire and Emergency New Zealand wanted to remind the public that unattended cooking, hot ash left too close to other combustible items and faulty electrical items are among the most common causes of domestic and commercial fires.
Their Winter fire safety tips include:
- Never leaving cooking unattended
- Keeping furniture and clothes at least 1m away from heaters
- Never covering heaters, keeping cords untangled
- Never placing objects on top of electric blankets, keeping them flat on the bed
- Replace electric blankets every five years
- Keep matches and combustibles away from children
Testing for Faulty Appliances
Regular appliance testing in commercial and domestic environments will help reduce the risk of a fire on your property. A faulty appliance can cause a fire because of multiple reasons including:
- Overheating to the point where nearby objects catch fire
- Frayed or damaged cords that let off sparks
The following items are in the high-risk category and should be tested regularly:
- Electric blankets
- Heaters and fans
- Power boards and cords
- Chargers
- Toasters and kettles
- Outlets
It’s often the regular, every day appliances that are neglected and used past their natural life span. This means that they are at a higher risk of being faulty and should be tested or replaced.
At Jim’s Test & Tag, we offer appliance testing services to clients all around New Zealand. If you are worried about the quality of some of your appliances (or equipment) please contact us now so we can visit your property and identify any dangerous appliances.
Following Manufacturer Instructions
One of the best ways to avoid an electrical fire on your property is to follow the manufacturer instructions. The instructions will include information about which extension cords and outlets are compatible with your appliance as well as how to use your equipment safely.
Believe it or not, the instructions are included for a reason. Make sure you give them a read before you throw them away.
